Analysis - Herbert Clutter, age 48, was found in the basement. He was hung, hands and mouth tapped shut, stabbed, throat slashed, and shot in the head with a shotgun charge. His body was then laid sprawled out on a mattress. His wife Bonnie Clutter, age 45, was found in an upstairs bedroom bound and gagged with a shotgun blow to the head as well. Her daughter Nancy Clutter, age 15, was found in a separate upstairs room bound, also with a shotgun blow to the head. In an adjoining room to his father Herbert, Kenyon Clutter, age 14, was found bound and gagged with a shotgun blow to the head as well.
Motive - Dick and Perry wanted to know where the family was hiding a safe. When Herbert Clutter couldn't give information of a safe, they executed all four family members.
